We tried to revive the forgotten performing arts through “MARDAANI” Dishaa Creative Dance Group

Mardaani, a term that resonates strongly with contemporary society, signifies a woman’s valour and protest. Come to think of it, the term reminds one of Subhadra Kumari Chauhan’s poem – Khoob Ladi Mardaani Woh Toh Jhansi Vali Rani Thi. It was when the queen of Jhansi took up arms against British, she was titled with epithet ‘‘MARDAANI’’. Inspired by Rani Lakshmi Bai’s trajectory as the first female warrior in the First War of Independence, Dishaa creative dance group recently, produced a dance drama ‘MARDAANI’. Mardaani was played to a packed house on 3rd January 2019 at Shri Ram Centre, Mandi House. The dance- drama left the spectators mesmerized through and through. With powerful music and even more powerful yet graceful dance, every artist danced and played their characters perfectly. The Choreographer of the show Mrs. Basu Sharma was effortless in fusing contemporary and creative dance with forgotten Indian art forms like Kalaripayattu, Lathi , Chhau and Semi-Classical dance. Every scene had a surprise element and different feel that made the audience gape with ‘wow’.

There was a bit aerial dance as well. The lead dancer Preeti Das danced with Elan. Tahir Ali, Rakesh Kumar, Disha Sharma, Sonu, Anurag, Deepak Verma, Jai Singh, Rohit Kanojia were among the other main dancers who enlivened the stage with their supple and fluid dance. The audience who watched the show loved it and said that they would love to watch a rerun.
