On the night of 18 November 2017, it was a proud moment for us Indians when Haryana-born Manushi Chhillar was crowned Miss World 2017 at a glittering event held at Sanya City Arena in Sanya, China . The win comes 17 years after Ms. Priyanka Chopra brought home the coveted title back in 2000. Manushi was crowned by 2016 Miss World winner, Miss Puerto Rico Stephanie Del Valle. Andrea Meza, who is Miss Mexico was the first runner up and Stephanie Hill from England was second runner up.
Around 108 women from across the world participated in the beauty pageant. Manushi Chhillar was crowned 54th Femina Miss India World 2017 by the outgoing Femina Miss India World 2016 Priyadarshini Chatterjee at the finale event held in at Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai on Sunday 25 June 2017 where she represented the state of Haryana as Miss India Haryana 2017 and competed with 29 contestants from other states and Delhi.
The first Indian woman to win the coveted title was Reita Faria in 1966. After Ms. Faria, Mrs. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan won the title in 1994 followed by Diana Haydon in 1997, Yukta Mookhey in 1999 and Priyanka Chopra in 2000.
Chhillar is one of the very few Miss India winners who were medical students during their reign, like Yasmin Daji – Miss Universe 1966-3rd Runner Up, Reita Faria – Miss World 1966, Kalpana Pandit-dethroned Femina Miss India 1989, Lakshmi Pandit-dethroned Femina Miss India 2004 and Pooja Chitgopekar – Miss Earth – Air 2007.
After reaching the top five, Manushi was asked during the Question and Answer round, which profession she thought deserved the highest salary and why.
Replying to the question, Manushi said it was not a question about a person’s salary and that a mother was worthy of the highest respect.
“I think a mother is of highest respect. I don’t think its just about cash but love and respect she gives to someone. She is the biggest inspiration in my life. Mother should get highest respect.”
Her winning answer to the final question “The lesson that they would take back after spending a month with 30 contestants” in the final of Femina Miss India 2017 was “Throughout the journey I had a vision and with this came a belief, I can change the world.
